Can you help - tracking down my front cover!
Hey folks
Today I sold an image via a stock agency - it's of a baby elephant reaching up to touch an adult, perhaps mum - for use on what I think is a travel brochure.
Front cover full size.

The location is North America and dates of usage between September and December 2007.
It says it's to be used in direct mail/ brochures for ferries/ cruises in thr travel and tourism industry.
Front cover!!!!!
I'm guessing that the company offers holidays to Africa so if any of you come across this image on a front cover, please keep it, contact me and I'd really, really, really like to receive a copy. Of COURSE I'll cover your costs!
Thanks so much!
Here's the image:

I know this isn't a standard thing here in Fodors but I've never made a sale like this before and I'm excited beyond belief and eager to see it in situ. The stock agency, quite reasonably, does not give out customer details to photographers because it would not be fair for them to have constant requests for portfolio copies.
And yet... I'd love to see one!

Great photo! Great opportunity.
But, my goodness, it can be just about any US-based tour operator who publishes a "coffee-table"-type brochure:
A&K, Micato, Tauck, Africa Travel, Smithsonian, Geo Expeditions, AMNH, so many more I can't recall.
Will be watching!

Yeah, it could be anyone at ALL including a fairly small or regional operator that only sends out brochures on request...
I have no idea!
I know the chances of anyone catching this are small but I figured if everyone had the image of a little ele reaching up it's trunk to the adult eles, in black and white, in mind, then the chance was greatly improved and where else would there be a greater collection of North Americans likely to receive literature on travel to Africa than right here?!

Well done, Kavey! Excellent!
But I'm puzzled. If your sale was through the same agency as the one I told you about, you should have contact with the purchaser or their agent (to negotiate a price so your work is not undervalued). I usually ask for a copy of the finished product, whether it's a brochure, a book, or whatever, and almost always get one or more in addition to the sale price.

I'm sorry, I don't recall the agency you mentioned. This was through Alamy, an agency I've had my images with for maybe a year or 18 months now (I'd have to check). Only a small subset of my images as it takes so long to process and keyword that I'm dreadfully behind!
Can you remind me which agency you suggested?
With Alamy, the photographer has absolutely no contact with the client - the agency uses a price calculator, if you like, based on duration of use, distribution of publication, size and placement of image and so forth.
In exchange for marketing and making the sale Alamy takes their 30% (I think) commission. The photographer gets the rest.

Kavey,
Photographers Direct, UK-based. You are able to negotiate with the purchaser at all times; the agency has price guidelines, but it's in your hands and the commission is lower than Alamy.

Hi Kavey and many congrats on the sale. Wow front cover, that great stuff! I also have been contributing to Alamy for a short time but still to make any sales. Would love to see your image could give the Alamy file code? You could see my images on Alamy under pseudonym "Chromix"

Thanks everyone.
John, aaaah. Photographers Direct. I'd come across them before and am not keen on their model. I know I'd get higher commission but... I don't think they are the agency for me. That said, some people seem to do very well with them, I think it depends on style and attitude. But thank you for the reco. Much appreciated.
Tuckeg - the ferry/cruise is just one of their categories - I suspect it's an either or category - they aren't saying that the company operates both necessarily. Hence I think it must be cruises.
Mohammed, Image ID: A86K0A and it took several months for my first sale. I'd got to the point of assuming I'd make none at all!

That's fine, Kavey...everybody to their own. I just like to have a say in what price I get and what use my photos are put to (and that of course includes knowing exactly who the buyer is, one advantage of which is that I can deal directly with them in future if they like my product).

Kavey my hubby has sold a few things through a stock agency that operates like the one you mention. But... he has often received a copy of whatever his photo is in in the mail and he has never requested it so who know you may be lucky!
Congrats by the way and I will keep an eye out for you.
