Can I bring wine into Egypt?

We are going to Egypt from Rome and I thought I might bring in a few bottles of Italian wine to drink on our nile cruise.
Does anyone know of restrictions on this?
Thank you.

I bought along a couple of bottles of champange when I went to Egypt and had no problem. I think as a tourist you can bring 2 bottles each.

I found the website for the customs and excise ministry in Egypt, but there is no English version. Take a look at http://www.customs.gov.eg/index.html

I did come accross a statement in my research that you could be taxed at something like 300% of the value of the wine plus and import duty, but that may only be for people shipping personal effects to Egypt to live there. Couldn't tell from the website, http://tracking.alliedintl.com/customs_reports/EG.asp

Don't know if you want to bring this wine because of the specific wine - or you want to have alcohol - our Nile cruise had a bar that served alcoholic drinks.

Thank you for your replys. I had checked the Egyptian consulate web site and could find nothing about alcohol. I would like to bring in wine because I thought it would be less expensive than paying for it on the boat.
Has anyone tried Egyptian wine or beer?

Egyptian beer is absolutely fine (and very cheap by US/European standards). Just order the bottled beer (the variety called Stella). If you ask for "a Stella" the waiters know exactly what you are after.

Egypt is very cheap generally so I am not sure you would gain anything by trying to buy wine in Italy and carry it over unless it was the quality of the wine that was your key concern.

The Egyptian beers are fine like Dave said. Stella is good - like a mild larger.

Egyptian wines - TERRIBLE! Taste like a bad cough medicine. I've tried reds, whites, roses and sparkling and none of them are any good.

Bring your own if you like wine and I would bring 2 bottles per person.

I've just searched Google and found this about duty free allowance for Egypt:

Duty Free
The following goods may be imported into Egypt without incurring customs duty: 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200g of tobacco; 1l of alcoholic beverages; a reasonable amount of perfume and 1l of eau de cologne; goods up to E£20.

Egyptian reds were quite bad, but there were some reasonable whites. In tourist beach places and at least in Luxor there are tax free shops where tourists can buy alcohol showing their passport.

Outside those shops there are often locals who ask you to buy something for them, too.

The Stella beer is excellent. The wine we tasted was a RED, which was terrible, the very worst. So if you can bring in 1L for each of you and aren't inconvenienced in doing this, do so.
