Can "European" plugs be used in South Africa?

I looked up a pic of plugs in SA and it looks like they have 3 round prongs. I'm wondering if I can use my adapter with 2 round prongs, the same one I use in Europe? It's hard to tell if the 2 prong European plugs are aligned the same way as 2 prongs on the bottom in SA. I hope this makes sense.

Here's a good source, and map for electricity info:

No sorry, it will not work, you will need a south african adapter.

stokeygirl Aug 7th, 2015 04:55 AM

No. The round pins on a European plug are smaller and closer together.

See you soon!

DebitNM, are you sure that is going to work here in South Africa ? I looked at the photos and none of the prongs look like it would fit here.

DebitNM Aug 7th, 2015 05:43 AM

Oh, no, I somehow thought it would, based on what it said. I haven't ordered them yet, was going to today!

This is the flip side, still no good??

Hi DebitNM, this is what they look like here in South Africa:

I dont see anything that it looks like it could fit. Definitely not the European plugs as I have a lot of European appliances and they need an adapter here.

The South African plug is very unusual. I've met plenty of dismayed people who thought they had bought a "worldwide" adaptor, only to find it doesn't work for South Africa.

This is most helpful, thank you all.

I am flying into CPT but I have a layover at JNB. Can I buy an adapter at JNB?

stokeygirl Aug 7th, 2015 10:03 AM

I bought one in transit back from Botswana last month. But I think if you are going international to domestic you might be in a different area. But I would imagine if they sell them in the international terminal they probably do in domestic too.

Is this right??

Thanks stokeygirl, if the South African plug is so unique then they must sell many of those to tourists. I will try to find one at the airport but if that isn't possible I will pick one up in town.

If you're in the US you can buy a universal type M adapter at Amazon cheaply and conveniently. I always like to know I've got what I need before I head off.

With all of the stuff we use that needs to be charged, we take a small 3-outlet US electric strip with USB plugs. That way we just need one adapter for all the cameras, phones, gadgets. There are two types of SA plugs, one with three big round pins and one with two little ones. We found it easiest to buy them there. I know there are a couple of phone stores (conveniently near the ATMs and banks) and a pharmacy at the airport. Both should carry the adapters. Also be careful if you need a converter. We killed our flashlight at the beginning of our last trip. We also carry a car adapter - you should be able to charge your camera batteries in an emergency while out on game drives.

Deb,
That's the one (Ceptincs) we got, too.

DebitNM Aug 10th, 2015 05:10 AM

I ordered the ones from my second link (Ceptincd); they'll be here tomorrow. 3/$8.
Too bad we won't see you, PM till the end of your trip or we could have given them to you. But heck, still happy we can hang out for a day in Jo'burg! ALMOST TIME!!!
