Camp Swimming pools safe?

Is there any danger in swimming in the camp pools...such as picking up an organism/parasite from the water? I know they caution against going in fresh water...but I hope they use chlorine or something to kill stuff in the pools. Anyone have any problems from swimming?

I have wondered about this as well, especially since we'll have 5 children under 16 who will want to enjoy the pool for sure!

Any thoughts from the experts?

As safe as any other pool anywhere...depends on how careful the owners are about hygiene, maintenance etc, and I imagine most camp managers are very careful.

I have friends who used a camp plunge pool and who are still alive. If you are concerned, you should ask every camp you intend to visit whether the plunge pool water is chlorinated or otherwise treated.

one should look before they leap. I have had to give way for a croc once and twice for a hippo in the pool. We won't talk about the ellies drinking from the pool while I'm in for a dip.

JazzDrew - didn't you visit last with your son? In late-June or July? Did he venture into the pool at Kirawira? Or was it too cold? The air or water?

At many you might, as luangwablondes mentions, have competition with the ellees or hippos. You should be able to smell chlorine, but ask... if not sure, don't dive in.

As pools might not be heated, do test the water temp especially during the winter months (late-July-Sept).

We swam in four different pools in the Masai Maral last August. They were all clean but cold, low to mid 70's. Only went in during early afternoon hours, when the sun was out, so you could warm up afterwards. No problems swimming, except for cold water. Very refreshing!
