Cameroon or Gabon from South Africa?

My wife & I will be visiting South Africa next August-September for birding & nature photography. We'd like to include a West African country in our trip, due to its unique bird life. However, I'm unable to find any air carrier that flies from J'burg to Douala (Cameroon) or Libreville (Gabon). Can this be done on our own? Do KLM, Air France, SAA, or any of the other African carriers have regular flights to these places of interest?

Air France flies to Libreville, but from Paris, as does the Gabon flag carrier. The easiest country in West Africa to get to from South Africa is Senegal, and SAA stops in Dakar on its flight from Johannesburg to NY.

There is a national park on the Senegal/Mauritania border that's great for birdwatching.
