Cairo train station
 

Is there a left-luggage place at the Cairo train station? Our hotel is out by the pyramids, so we don't want to haul our bags around Cairo from when we check out until 8 p.m., when our overnight sleeper train departs.

I believe there is a left luggage facility at the train station, but after having been to the station I wouldn't leave my luggage there if I actually wanted it to be there when I returned. If you're planning to see the pyramids, I'd consider arranging your schedule so you see them on that last day. You can then leave your bags at your hotel and pick them up on the way to the train station.

Unfortunately, Julian, we will have already visited the pyramids. We'll be in Cairo 4 days before we leave for Aswan.

How long would you recommend we get to the station before our train departs?

Sorry if I was unclear above -- what I meant was that if you have the flexibility to rearrange your Cairo schedule so that you see the pyramids on the last day it would make things easiest from a logistical standpoint. You could leave the luggage at the hotel and spend the day at the pyramids, then take a taxi to the station.

If you plan on booking any time with a private guide with a car, this last day would be ideal -- the guide can then drop you at the train station.

If neither of the above work for you, you may still want to leave your luggage at your hotel and come back in the evening to get it rather than lugging it around all day.

My sister and I arrived at the station about 45 minutes early -- it's a pretty large place, though not as confusing or chaotic as we had feared. I think half an hour would be more than enough time.

Don't be surprised if your train is over an hour late -- ours was both coming and going from Lower Egypt.
