Here is a site that is working as of now: www.egyptianmuseum.gov.eg

Taxis are reasonable but agree on a price before getting in the car.

It's a must see.

First of all, which port? Alexandria? Port Said? Either one is about 3+ hours from the museum and taxis won't be an option. You can hire a tour company to take you from the ship to Cairo and around some sites, or you can go with a ship tour, but getting off the ship and asking a taxi in Alexandria or Port Said to drive you to Cairo won't happen. As far as I know, they have made it difficult, if not impossible for taxis to go from city to city without special permits obtained in advance.

Regarding opening times and closing times - the gates open at 8:30, and the doors open at 9:00 (I think) and they do close at 6:00. Of course all that changes in Ramadan.

There are no senior discounts. There are adult foreigner prices and student foreigner prices and the same for Egyptians, but I doubt you need that.
Adult tickets are LE50 each. Royal Mummy Room tickets are LE100 each.

It does take 2-3 hrs from the port at Alexandria to Cairo. I meant before that once in Cairo, taxis weren't too much. There are tour companies that offer RT transportatin to Cairo. This is just a smaple from Blue Seas:
"Cairo on Your Own Tour: This full day tour starts in Alexandria, where you’ll board a motorcoach for the two- to three-hour drive through the desert to Cairo. You’ll be dropped off at a centrally located spot in the heart of the city. You’ll have the day to explore the sights of Cairo: the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, Tahrir Square, Khan el-Khalili suq, the Cairo Tower, Al Urman botanical garden, and the Cairo Zoo, among others.

Hope this helps

jbella - I tried to Google that Blue Seas tour you talked about but got nowhere. Where can I find out more about that?

Re the trip from Alex to Cairo - it sort of depends on what day of the week you are coming to Cairo how long you might take to get here. There is a stretch of the highway under construction that can get all boogered up with traffic and take an hour to get through the snarl there at times. I would say you best count on 3 hours to the Museum which is in the center of downtown if you are coming any day but Friday. Friday traffic would be light.

If you organize a site seeing tour to pick you up at the ship, then you can get to the museum with that bus tour.

Again, yes, I am 99% certain that Alexandria taxis are not allowed to drive you to Cairo without special permits that they would have to get in advance. I will ask around and see if I hear different from that.

My favorite taxi driver in Alexandria just returned my call. He said he would drive to Cairo from the dock if you want. He said it might take money here and there to the police to make any problems go away, so you would have to plan to pay those, but they would probably not be too much.

He said he'd do it for $100.00 USD so contact me off here if you want to set that up. I can't guarantee you won't run into problems if you do elect to do it this way, but if you want to chance it, let me know. If you want a sure thing, pay for a real tour to pick you up and take you.

Here is the link to 7Blue Seas:
http://www.7blueseas.com/destination...d=1&page=3

It is a cruise travel site but they book ground tours also. I thought that looked the best as it was self directed.

I found 2 other sites that offer day tours to Cairo but they have planned itineries:

www.memphistours.net

marvelousegypttravel.com

Egypt is a beautiful country and as you can tell from Casual_Cairo's postings, very friendly & helpful people. I know you will have a great time.
