Bwindi (Gorillas!) now on Google Earth!

Bwindi maps are here:

http://www.go-safari.com/Bwindi/bwindi.htm

You can see the locations of airstrips, lodges, camps, park boundary, etc!

The hilly terrain looks awesome in 3D. It is also incredible to see the effects of deforestry around the park. The gorillas have such a small area left. I wonder if they know that their world is shrinking.

While I have the exact GPS tracks of my gorilla treks that pinpoint their locations, I decided not to post it on the maps. Someone else probably will before too long, but I want their locations to remain a mystery - at least for now.

If you have pics of the lodges/camps at Bwindi, please send me some! I will post my own soon.

Great! Thanks again for putting all this together. Helpful and fascinating and fun.

Many thanks Eben, yet again.

I think your right on to not want to let on about the gorila treks. Let that happen later if it has to.

Hi Sherry

It is strange. Once I marked the GPS locations of the gorillas during my treks (M and HB groups), it just felt wrong! I felt like it was exposing their last little bit of privacy.

I was also shocked to see how far we trekked to find them and we were quite lucky to find them within 2 hours! The first 90 minutes of the trek was really steep and now I know why - that first ridge is no joke when viewed in Google Earth!

I was thinking of taking my GPS on our gorilla treks, but then posting just the vertical elevation profile on the internet, to give people an idea of how difficult the hike is. Seems like people ask about that issue a lot, and posting that would probably not reveal the gorillas' location.
