budget Serengeti camping safari

Does anyone know of a good and trustworthy Serengeti camping safari? We are looking to go in May 2012 in south Serengeti.

Suggest you post on Trip Advisor. www.tripadvisor.com/forums , select Tanzania.

Do provide more info than above, as:
- how many total days in-country
- whether public (shared facilities, loos/showers), or
- special sites (private facilities)
- estimated budget.
- how many traveling
- budget camping would include: guide/vehicle & cook as well tents/food.

Only the Southern Serengeti? Maybe combine with Central also. You'll also have to stop somewhere between Arusha and Serengeti as the drive can take up most of the dayight hours any given day and same on return. Don't forget to consider also Lake Manyara and/or Ngorongoro Crater to/from Serenget.

Do know that May is the 'long' rains, though no guarantee of wet, but as it's low season, prices for staying some places in a lodge, should be considered as opposed to possible wet ground.

On TA, lots of names of outfitters who can assist you.

Can you give us a monetary definition of budget? I'd be interested in the responses.

May and only South Serengeti are not the most productive combo.

Not unusual for some of the herds still to be in Southern Serengeti in May. Some though already heading to Central and if towards end-May might even be in West. Still, I would split the time between South & Central. If they happen to be in West, it's then only a 2/hr game drive.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have since learned that the large herd will be more toward the west corridor in late May so that is now our destination. there will be two of us and I was hoping for a camping safari for 4 days that will cost around $150-$200 per person per day, though I realize that most most companies cost much more.

If what you are thinking is that camping in the Serengeti is as easy/cheap as in USA National park, I don't think so. Likely to cost more than a safari lodges because of the logistics/trucks required to support just you. Including an armed guard.

Hi,

I suggest you contact Good Earth tours http://www.goodearthtours.com/Tanzan...Adventure.html for a quote for one of their budget camping tours - this is a little higher than you state in your budget and to a different part of Tanzania. However, you may struggle to find something at a lower rate at that time of year in the Western Corridor.

Happy planning,

Pol
