Botswana Field Guide
Have been looking for a good field guide that is specific to Botswana but have yet to find such a thing.
For those of you who have traveled to Africa ... Will a general South Africa field guide be a better option ? Can you recommend a good compact field guide that I can take with me. I am assuming that most camps have guides in the vehicles but I would like to have my own to study before we depart. 7 1/2 weeks and counting... Brenda |

I would recommend the Richard Estes Safari Companion, it does not have color plates but has so muh relevant information about each mammal species. If its a bird guide then either Newmans or Sasol are great. There in Audobon guide to mammals and birds of Africa, but for study ahead I prefer the Estes. Matt (16.5) |
Thanks Matt.. I found a copy of Richard Estes book in our public library system.
Do you take a feild guide with you or did you find the camps had them in the vehicles? Brenda |
wallybrenda, the vehicles usually have a guide, but you won't be looking at it much with the live game in front of you! However, every single lodge I have visited had a great library of field guides that you can look at during siesta.

I dont take the mammal guide with me, preferring to read up on things before and after. I do take my Newmans Bird Guide with me, most vehicles have one, but I like my own so I can improve my spotting ability without having to have the guide passed back and forth. Also the guide sometimes has a different book and it is great fun to both have your guide available and be comparing illustrations with what you saw and achieve consensus on an ID. |
