Botswana and Cape town guidebook

Can anyone recommend a guidebook for Botswana and Cape town? There are so many out there that it's overwhelming. Does anyone have a favorite?

Susan,

The best guide book i can recommend is the fodors board.......you can get more info to all your questions here than any guide book.

However, if you are looking for a guide book........for Botswana the bradt guide is pretty good, IMO

Hello,

Fodors is great once you have some idea what's going on, but a guidebook is better for background and general information.

For Botswana, get the Bradt guide to Botswana -- it's head and shoulders above the rest.

For Cape Town, the best guide I've found is the Time Out Guide to Cape Town.

Sorry -- it looks like Fodors doesn't like long links. You'lll need to cut and paste the full address to find the books.

Julian

May I introduce you to tinyurl.com - you enter a looooong URL and it stores it in a database and gives you a short one to use instead...

does the Bradt guide give you some history of Botswana and its people and culture, or is it all about safaris and wildlife? I would like a combination of both

Bradt have quite good coverage - educational sections on the country and people at the front, stuff on sights, and sections on food and accommodations...

They are good guides.

Sorry, posted before I finished.

I know I have a Bradt Botswana guide around here someplace but I can't find it...

The Namibia one definitely has sections on History, Economy, People and Culture...

I really ought to get my thoughts fully together before I post.

Other guide series to consider include Footprint and Insight - each series has strengths and weaknesses so I usually make sure I have at least two for most places I visit. I trawl book warehouse outlet shops reasonably often as they often have recent editions of travel guides and if I see any for destinations I'm considering I buy them. Then I buy one new, updated guide when planning the trip and I'm set!

Susan,

Yes, the Bradt guide contains everything you are looking for and more........including a detailed description of all the camps.....

Some small errors......like the Kwando section says, hard to find cheetahs at the Kwando camps.....but that's not true......
