book recommendations to learn about the maasai culture

I leave for my trip in three weeks and would love to learn about the maasai culture beforehand. I have searched this site for book recommendations, but really couldn't find much. There are several books on Amazon, but I thought I would check with you all to see if you have any recommendations before picking.

Thanks so much.

"Worlds of a Maasai Warrior" by Tepilit Ole Saitoti is an interesting book by a Maasai who later was educated in the West. He also co-authored the "tabletop" book, "Maasai" with photographer Carol Beckwith.

Broken Spears: A Maasai Journey by Elizabeth L. Gilbert and The White Masai by Corinne Hofmann might be of interest.

Gilbert was a Nairobi-based photojournalist who did assignments for various magazines in the 1990's, including one too many floods, famines and brutal wars, and burned out on it, so decided to photograph the Maasai instead. The book has photos of several interesting ceremonies and also of a lioness hunt, which you don't see often. Gritty realism with black-white photos, not your average glossy table-top book.

Hofmann was a young Swiss tourist to Kenya who fell in love with a Maasai warrior, pursued him and married him. The first half reads like a Romance novel (love at first sight, overcoming sociey's obstacles for true love, marrying your one and only), the second half reads like Emile Zola (hepatitis, malaria, accusations of infidelity, beatings, fleeing Africa with child in tow). Interesting reading.

You might be able to find these at your local library.
