Best Place(s) to visit in mid-April?

Trying to decide where to visit since it is off-season and the start of the rains (from what I have researched). Just me and my wife.
1. First trip to Africa
2. Obviously would like to safari.
3. Maybe a combination of tent and resort.
4. Would like to see Victoria Falls.
5. I don't care to spend days on the beach - I want to see wild Africa!
6. I don't care for tourist crowds if I can help it.

Thanks for any recommendations,

East Africa has short (Nov/Dec) and long (Mar-May) rains but Southern Africa has one long rainy season from Nov, but by April it's basically over. So it's certainly not normally the start of the rains in Southern Africa.

This year El Nino seems to be making it a very dry rainy season across Southern Africa- so far. This means potentially April could be better game viewing than you'd usually expect.

In contrast, East Africa has been getting floods. So I would go south- either South Africa, or my choice would be Botswana. Very easy to combine either with Victoria Falls.

I agree with stokeygirl. If your budget can handle it, Botswana. It's shoulder season, so you might be able to get a good deal (for Botswana which is very expensive). Add a few nights in greater Kruger too see rhino which are extremely rare in Botswana. They are gorgeous. If not, a Mashatu Tented/greater Kruger trip would fun and more affordable. Both are easily combined with VF. You could add a few nights in Chobe, dependent on water levels, to make the flight to VF more than just seeing the falls.

This year, I'd go with Botswana due to El Nino.

3. Maybe a combination of tent and resort.
How about a mobile tented safari in Botswana, which may start in Vic Falls. The one I did started there. Then a Sabi Sands, South Africa lodge.

I did a Wilderness Safaris mobile in Botswana. In plannint a return mobile safari to Bots, I'd also consider Masson or Unlimited Tours & Safaris, too. There are quite a few other companies that would provide a great experience.
