The Mamounia. Expensive.

Check out the 'Destinations' section on this site. Looks like The Mamounia was well liked but expensive.

La Maison Arabe got a great rating too. I actually have friends that stayed there and simply loved it. Their website makes it look fabulous.

I've actually worked as a hotel reviewer testing out all the top end hotels in Marrakesh - terrible job but someone's got to do it!!
I thought Mamounia was rather snobbish and resting on its laurels, and would definitely suggest a more intimate, stylish riad-type place.
The most sumptuous was probably Riad Enija - also a little pricey, but very nicely done out, with three separate inner courts, one of them a lovely leafy garden, and vast rooms with great decor and attention to detail. Friendly though slightly unusual Swiss-Swedish owners.
Villa des Orangers was a close second - not so central and slightly larger, but a little slicker in its operation, and again superbly comfortable rooms. Finally there's always Amanjena, part of the Aman resorts, but it's quite new still and hasn't yet settled into its rhythm, I would say.
You can read my reviews and see my pics on:

http://www.i-escape.com/country_summary_pts.php?country=Morocco

exc ept Amanjena which is amanena.com (and I think i-escape can book it for you).

You'll have a great time whatever, it's a colourful, vibrant, labyrinthine city with lots to see and do. Try not to get lost more than twice!

Thanks for your comments MichaelD.

We've been twice at La Mamounia and were not disappointed. Service was excellent.

We visited La villa des Orangers. This is more intimate and very nicely appointed. My only concern would be the fact that it is located in a typical area of Marrakesh, and next to a mosk... so expect early "wake-up calls" at 5 AM...

MichaelD: I would have a question for you. Have you tested the recently opened Sofitel hotel in Marrakech?

Regards.
Joelle

Thanks Michael for all your help, hubby has booked the Riad Enija for a week, they couldn't fit us in for our 3rd night so clevely suggested that we stay one night @ the Palazzo Desdamona @ Essouira then returning the next day back at the Enija in a different room so we will experience both Enija 1 & 2.
The roof top swimming pool is due to be complete in time for Easter, but the owners have made arrangements for us to swim elsewhere if not completed prior to our visit. We have booked with them direct & have found them very helpful. Can anyone else suggest what to do now!!!!!!! Quiet fancy the Atlas mountains, fine food & good shopping. Info would be helpful.......
Thanks again to everyone for their comments.

Maison Arabe was one of the best hotels (if not the best) I've stayed at ever. Small and intimate and luxurious. IF you are interested, do a search and you will find some reviews in this forum and also in the fodors.com/miniguides section. I was there for my birthday last April and it was magical!
