Best beach in Africa is in Burundi--Imelda was ahead of her time

The best beach claim was made by my Rwanda safari guide. Years ago Imelda posted a report in which she and her husband accidentally ended up flying to Burundi and did not realize the mistake until they were off the plane in the airport.

The beach is Saga Plage in Bujumbura on Lake Tanganyika. The recommended luxury resort is Cub du Lac.

No first hand experience with Burundi, Lake Tanganyika, or Club du Lac.

That's funny, I was just thinking about their short visit to Burundi the other day--thinking it sounds like something I might do. At least now I know where to go.

Welcome back, Lynn! Can't wait to read about your trip and what you're planning next.

The beach looks nice but the rooms..............

But - who would travel to Burundi just for a beach and a "regular" room which doesn't offer any particular atmosphere other than any hotel room in a big city?

Lynn, where have you been?
Welcome back..........

It might be just a regular room, but it would be a regular room in Burundi. What I want to know is can you snorkel? Not in the room but from Saga Plage in Lake Tanganyika.

I don't know if anyone would travel just to Burundi for the beach alone, but maybe after some gorilla tracking, it might be a nice ending.

Where have I been? Not in Burundi, but close. I've been in Rwanda and Uganda after a brief trip through Nairobi National Park.

Thanks for the welcome, Leely!

This is so funny. And that the we're all thinking about it at the same time. Lynda and I were just talking about this incident this afternoon as Tom and I left their home after the GTG. Where is Imelda now? I think maybe she had a baby and they aren't travelling much??? Her ears must be burning right now!

Of course, I had to explain the whole story to Tom on the drive back to Seattle. We did not not get off the plane in Burundi on our way from Nairobi to Kigali! I knew better from reading Fodors. Thank you Imelda

It's sad that Burundi missed out on the opportunities of tourism that Rwanda has taken advantage of. It's interesting that Rwanda did a 180-degree turn after the genocide while Burundi continued to war on.

SV, I imagine there are plenty of Peace Corps Volunteers, NGO workers, and various diplomats that would love to stay in a place like this, especially after 6 weeks in the REAL bush (not some fancy safari lodge!).

Peace corps, volunteers were not the target in the OP ;-)

I'm here !!
Hi all!
Lynda just e-mailed me with the link to this thread
I haven't been on here in a while ... to be honest, it gives me too much longing to go back to Africa if I come on here and it's not an option at the moment unfortunately.... all for good reason though - Safarimama is right - we now have a little boy of just over 12 months old and he has put a halt to our gallop travelwise, for a little while at least.
Glad you didn't get off the plane in Burundi Safarimama - so our little 'adventure' had some advantaeges!!

It's funny really because Declan and I only spoke about our 'brief' visit to Burundi the other day! ... I think it is one of those things that we will never ever forget
I have to say, I really miss you guys and the banter on here although I'm sure that I would hardly know anyone on here now.

Lynn - you got to do the Gorillas!!! Now that is one trip report I will HAVE to read no matter how much longing it gives me!

Take care everyone - miss you guys!
Imelda xx

Congrats on the baby to both of you. It was fun to meet you that day in Vancouver. How could we not find you in the cruise terminal with that sign???? It was a gorgeous day! Just perfect for having "fun" in the park!

Welcome back to the board,
Kristina

Hi Patty and Kristina!!!
Thank you both very much for your good wishes!

Kristina, that was 'some' sign alright ... Trust Lynda to think of something like that!
And yes, it was a really fabulous day in all senses of the word - a great city and great company AND lets not forget about the food! What more could we have asked for ... except maybe for a little more time ... maybe next time .. when we're brave enough to take our little fella on a long haul flight
Thanks for the welcome back .. hopefully now I'll get to keep just a 'squint' on the board .. and try not to get too lonesome for Africa ;-)
Take care,
Imelda xx

Congrats on the addition to your family, Imelda! The three of you (or maybe even more) may some day share a family holiday in Burundi on the best beach in Africa.

Now THAT's a report I'll want to read!

Well now THAT's a plan Lynn!!!
It would be fun to go back and actually 'mean' to get of the plane next time!
Thanks for the congrats btw

Leely, thank you for your good wishes.
We booked the Gorilla permit with Amahoro and they also did the reservation for us for Gorillas Nest as we couldn't find a contact number or e-mail for them at the time but we booked Richard our driver with another company called ITT (I think that stands for International Tours and Travel but can't remember offhand right now for sure).
The hotel in Kigali I booked direct with the hotel ... not one I'd recommend but things might have changed by now.
Now the big question - are you planning on going Leely????
Tell all!!
We booked
