Beginning to Plan Africa trip for Aug
Trying to hone in on a trip to Africa in August--could really go for up to 30 days but probably will keep it to 15 or 18 since this is my first trip there. Looking at Zambia and Namibia--any suggestions for an outfitter? I am a 51 yo woman and may end up traveling by myself but it is possible a friend may join me.
Does anyone have any experience with Adventure Center Explore trips? They are based in Emoryville, CA and have lots of trips around the world. I'd love to hear suggestions from any of you and in particular about your experience with Adventure Center. Best Lynn22 |
Hi Lynn,
If you have not seen it, take a look at this thread from a Fodorite who just returned from Zambia last week: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34816201 Another thread from another Fodorite who traveled recently may be found here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34781330 Zambia is a very specialized location, so you should do your homework and go with an experienced outfitter. As a frequent traveler to Zambia, I would suggest that for the Zambian portion you at least visit South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi. Then, you could use Victoria Falls as a connecting point to the Caprivi Strip area to Namibia. I don't know if you have enough time in 15-18 days for the interior of Namibia, but take a look at this company in the Caprivi Strip: www.islandsinafrica.com For the other areas, here are some ideas: www.robinpopesafaris.com www.luangwariverlodge.com www.chiawa.com www.kasakariverlodge.com www.starofafrica.com Late August/Early September would be perfect timing for such a safari! |
Lynn,
Here is a link regarding Adventure Center. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...&tid=78630 Most people on this forum, myself included, prefer an agent that deals exclusively in Africa. I loved Zambia the two times I visited in July, but have not been to Namibia. Zambia offers walking and canoeing in addition to day and night drives. South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are some of the more common destinations in Zambia. They have the most abundant game. With 15-18 days you could also include North Luangwa and Kafue, more remote destinations, but also very worthwhile. I enjoyed the whole of Zambia and am planning a return. Here are some agents that have been used with success by Fodorites traveling to Southern Africa. Africa Adventure Destiny Africa Eyes on Africa Fish Eagle Go2Africa Taga If you are planning on this August, you will want to make bookings soon, since that is such a good time to go and the small camps and lodges fill up fast. Please post as your trip progresses. |
Lynn22,
I used Adventure Center in 2000 to boook a Guerba trip from Mali to Senegal. As I see it they are a broker/representative for alot of the European overland and small group tours eg Explore. I din't have any problem with them and the office is located close to where I live but I don't think they added any value. They couldn't provide any individual advice or assistance. If you're looking for a small group tour they may be helpful and economical but I agree with the suggestion to contact a safari specialist. This will give you an idea of the price range and possibilities. |
Thanks so much for your replies, very helpful. This site is such a great source of tried and true experience.
