Been to Abu Simbel?

I am planning a short tour to Egypt in November. Abu Simbel is optional for an "extra" $216. Worth it?

Would be worth it at twice the price.

At $216 it's a steal! So have to ask, are you flying to Abu Simbel or going overland?

I hope $216 is by air. It definitely shouldn't cost that much by road, which I did a few years ago from Aswan. Took about 3 hours each way across the desert, if I remember correctly.

But like others have said Abu Simbel is definitely worth it. It would be a shame to go as far as Aswan and not going to Abu Simbel.

To sandi
The travel brochure says an optional tour to Abu Simbel. I THINK it's by plane

To find out if it is by air (other than the obvious of calling company) would be to check timing - optional airtrips to Abu Simbel take 1/2 - 3/4 of a day and often leave early AM, returning by early afternoon.

seldre - may I ask which brochure, which tour operator? curiousity! does it include your transfers from where you start this optional tour?

We left Cairo at 4am for a 6am flight to Aswan, but since all on the plane were going to Abu Simbel before boarding our respective boats in Aswan, we didn't even land in Aswan and went right onto Abu Simbel. The bus transfered to the site where we met up with the tour guide. When tour complete, waited for bus to return us to airport and flight back to Aswan. This is when we boarded our ship - sometime between 12N-1pm.

I don't know about the situation now, but when I went to Abu Simbel by road in 1995, all vehicles travel in a convoy, and leave Aswan at abour 4am. The sunrise over the desert was pretty memorable. Got to Abu Simbel at around 8, stay for about 2 to 2.5 hours, and then arrive back in Aswan at around 2pm.

Definitely make the trip. Even the three hour bus trip is worth the effort. It was one of the top three highlights of our trip.

Not a single dissenting opinion, and you won't get one from me either. Truly fascinating place. I've got a number of photos in my Egypt gallery from Abu Simbel:
