backpack in pyramids

I'm wondering if I will be able to carry a small backpack when visiting the pyramids and tombs in Cairo and Luxor that hold my camera and other odds and ins. What is the proceedure when visiting these sight? In all the pictures there doesn't seem to be a gate, entrance area, is there? Or do we jut walk up to them? I know we have to buy tickets or at least pay. Any insight would ease a little anxiety for this upcoming trip. Thanks.

In the pyramids there is nothing preventing you from carrying a backpack in there, but the shaft is about 4'x4' square so it's a little tight with people going both ways. The tombs have lots of room to get in and out but you are not allowed to take photos inside. There is a guard posted outside to check for cameras. My daughter promised the guards she wouldn't turn hers on and they never took it from her before entering. Now I did see someone bribe the guard inside a tomb and the guard actually shined his flashlight inside a sarcophagus so the guy could take pictures. The guards are very low paid and a couple of bucks go a long way. At the Red Pyramid, 20 egyptian pounds got my daughter a ride on one of the guards camels. You'll find yourself doing a lot of tipping. Just about everyone has their hand out.
