Back from Zimbabwe

Hello,
I spent some time reading the entries on this site and asked for some advice prior to deciding where to go, but haven't posted much information myself. However, I returned yesterday from a trip to Zimbabwe, which included traveling to Hwange, Mana Pools, and Victoria Falls. I will try to post a more detailed report later, but wanted to say that the trip was incredible. The parks in Zimbabwe were beautiful and had a large diversity of wildlife; we had excellent game viewing while we were there and saw far more than I expected to see (including wild dogs). Also, the guides were truly exceptional and knew a great deal about everything we saw. This was my first trip to Africa, so I do not have any other comparison--but, I would highly recommend the locations to which we traveled.

I will report more later. -V

Looking forward to your trip report. I'm having some serious withdrawal this week, so having a new report to look forward to is just what I want to hear!

Vicki-

I'd love to hear about your trip, particularly Mana Pools as not many people have been there.

Please report back with details!

Hi V.

Looks like we were across the Zambezi from each other at virtually the same time. Had we known, we could have met halfway across the river for sundownners and to watch the sun set.

We too, had an amazing time in Zambia. No wild dogs, but watching a leopard mom defend her cubs and impala kill against raiding spotted hyenas was pretty incredible.

I, too, would love to read a first hand account of your trip. It will make a good first hand counterpoint to what we were told by people working at our camps re. what is going on in Zimbabwe now.

I'll be posting more as I catch up to all the things that need attending to, get pictures back (took a bunch of digital on point and shoots, but for the "serious" photography was still shooting film (that WILL change for our next trip).

I'll be particularly interested in logistics, safety issues eg getting around Zimbabwe, customs, communication, security, and tyour take on the current state of the government. What we heard was mostly not good, but I suspect, that most of the people moving to Zambia did so for economic reasons. I admit I have some trouble supporting in any way a government as certifiably bad as Mugabe's, but I've an open mind and can't wait for your first hand account.

BTW, if you're interested, I've also written a bit on our trip and the thoughts of people who have moved to Zambia from Zimbabwe on the thread "Difficult to compare: Mana Pools/Zambezi vs. Namibia?"

Jim
