Foodies would enjoy the restaurant called 96 Winery Road in Stellenbosch. Franschhoek is full of great restaurants too. We especially liked the French Connection.

I agree about the road signs in Stellenbosch. They're terrible! Everywhere else it's pretty easy to navigate.

Ask your hosts about wineries. Some are very big and commercial, some are small and intimate, some housed in old Cape Dutch buildings, some in very modern and beautiful buildings. Every hotel and tourist info place has maps of the wine routes with opening times listed. A lovely winery that hasn't been mentioned yet is Alto. All the others mentioned are nice too.

People seem to react to pinotage strongly, either love it or hate it, there doesn't seem to be a middle of the road position about it. (I adore it!)

The winelands are just story-book beautiful; you'll have a great experience no matter which town you stay in or which estates you visit.

Not topping- but I want to stress the importance of trip insurance. Long story short- our flight, the day before, was cancelled, due to engine probs. The counter was crazy trying to reroute those people on our flight. When we arrived in JoBerg, they made an announcement about a SARS case on plane and delayed deplaning. Just a scare, thank God. We had MAJOR car trouble- enough said- and our CSA insurance paid off for us. Don't risk an expensive trip like this- get a reliable policy!!

Re Stellenbosch road signs:

The road signs are on the curb of the road - yellow panels with inlaid black lettering. In other words, you've got to look down and not up. Trust me they are there! Navigating is made easy if you buy the Map Studio Street map book for Cape Town at any CNA (in all malls and airports) - Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Paarl are included in the Cape Town book.

Thanks for posting where to find your trip report - have printed it out to help us tackle the wineries!

Cheers!
