ATM's in Ghana
 

My daughter is doing a month long study abroad in Ghana. She got some information from someone else's study abroad program (different school) that went in May of 2006. This information said that the only way to get cash from an ATM in Ghana was to use a VISA credit card. Not debit, and not MasterCard or anything else. Does anyone have experience with this?

My debit card has the visa logo...this may be what they mean.

I went to Ghana last summer and will be going again in august. You can use a credit card or debit card as long as you have a pin number. Visa is the preferred method because mastercard may or may not work in the machines and no amex or discover. I used both a cc and debit and everything worked perfectly.

i wanted to ask, what study abroad is your daughter going on and what school did you get the informaion from? my school went and i know that there is not a lot of schools in the country that offer study abroads to ghana so it peaked my interest...

The program is through the University of Michigan.

The PIN number will probably need to be 4 numbers. I was in Ghana in Dec 2003/Jan 2004 and Dec 2004/Jan 2005, but didn't use an ATM/debit card. I just took cash and traveler's checks and had no problems at all...and I got very good exchange rates for both. Just have a backup money system in case the machine eats the card. Happy Travels!
