Aswan to Abu Simbel
I read that you may be advised to get your ticket for the flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel direct from Egypt Air rather than going through the tour operator. In fact I think I heard of an 85 US fare. When I contacted Egypt Air they gave me a figure of about 150 US. Is there some advantage in leaving the ticket until you get to Cairo. Also could you tell me the entrance fee at Abu Simbel and what other related costs are involved.
I guess I am just wondering if there is any real saving over the tour company price when you take into account the other costs you will have by going on your own.

We are leaving the middle of April and will appreciate any help you can give me.

Sue, If I remember correctly the cost to get into see Abu Simbel was between US$5 and $10. No cost to take bus to and from airport to Abu. There was another couple (Canadian) who were trying to book their own flight through EgyptAir and got about the same quote as you did, about $150. Maybe Lee will see this topic and respond. I guess the best way to get the least expensive ticket is to walk into an EgyptAir office in Cairo.

No one goes to Abu Simbel except to see site. It is very organized - get off the plane, get on a bus, get to the site, see the smiling vendors, see the incredible site. 1-2 hours is more than enough. Walk back past the very smiling and very eager vendors. Bus to plane to Aswan. We did the whole thing in 5-6 hours and did not feel rushed. Flights do sell out. When we got there, they told us the time of our return flight.

Although most people go for just 1-2 hours, it is possible to spend the night in Abu Simbel and I'd recommend it if you have the time. We just returned from an OAT trip that does that - we stayed at a lovely hotel overlooking the lake and attended the sound and light show which was great. By not being tied to the airline schedule, we were able to visit the temple when it wasn't crowded. The almost eerie feeling of being alone in some of the chambers there is one of my favorite memories of Egypt.
