Asilah? Better than Tangier?

My daughter and I will be taking a one or two day jaunt on the ferry from Spain into Morocco. Will we get a good taste of Moroccan culture in Tangier or should we go to Asilah? We enjoy more untouristed regions but safetly is a concern.

With just two days, skip Tangiers. I've not been to Asilah, but it looks a lot more interesting than Tangiers. For a real feel of Morocco, Fez or Marrakech would be a better city, but they're both quite a distance from the north coast by train (6+ hours to Fez, 9 hours to Marrakech). Wherever you go, don't hire a "guide" that approaches you; ask your hotel to arrange for a licensed guide if you want one. We three women traveled for two weeks in Morocco, and never felt unsafe - annoyed, maybe, by all the "guides" offering their services, but never unsafe.
