Alice,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Egypt and think your notes will provide valuable insights on how to make the most of the trip. We would most appreciate getting a copy of your notes. Read that you are planning your next adventure -- if you don't mind saying, where are you going? Thanks, Chris
DearAlice,
My husband wants to book a trip to Egypt for 3/26. we found a 4 day cruise from Aswan to Luxor for $399. Is that a good price? Price is for 2 adults and 2 children under 5. Interested mainly in the health aspect since we have young children and tipping money - dollars or E pounds?
should we take travellers checks or cash? Is Luxor worth some extra time.? Sorry for the short notice - this is a spontaneous thing. I was in Cairo 10 years ago myself and enjoyed it then, but a little apprehensive with the young children and how the cruise will be for them. Your notes would be greatly appreciated and asap if poss. thank you very much.
dear

I'll get the notes off to "you all" soon and, Kathryn, I'll try to be "Sooner"!! I did not pay for the Nile Cruise I went on as it was part of my tour package, but that does sound like a good price.

Chris - My next holiday is to Europe and what started out as an England/France trip has now blossomed into seven countries with the addition of Switzerland, Luxumbourg, Germany, Holland, and Belguim. There will be a slight touchdown from the Frence Alps gondola in Italy but doesn't quite seem right to count that (plus I'm not having to burn midnight oil trying to find a hotel room for there). This is a mother, sister, sister, brother trip. I am truly becoming overwhelmed, and can understand someone letting a tour company do all the work. But we are slowly getting some feedback from hotels we've emailed AND not all are "rejections".

Hopes the notes are some help to you.

So happy to be greeting Spring, Alice

I am planning a Mediterian Cruise in November visiting Alexandria and plan to go to Giza to see the pyramids, etc. Only have the day, but am interested in receiving your journals, they sound very interesting. Thanks in advance.

Message: Does anyone have suggestions on where to leave luggage when travelling to Abu Simbel? My husband and I will be leaving Cairo at 5:30 arriving Abu Simbel at 7:50. We leave Abu at 10:55 for a Nile cruise embarking in Aswan. Are there lockers at the Abu Simbel airport, and are they safe?

Pam. I didn't notice lockers at the Abu airport, but, of course, I was too busy being distracted by the boxes of rifles being carted off in front of me (see my notes - - good story). This would be a good question to post on the forum as I am sure others have been in the same situation. Notes will be off tomorrow.

Alice,

I actually posted this question on the "URGENT: ABU SIMBEL TRAVEL ADVICE” thread and received an answer. The flight is Cairo-Aswan-Abu Simbel, and apparently all luggage is left in Aswan airport and you just pick it up when you return back to Aswan from Abu Simbel. I confirmed this up by calling an agent who specializes in Egypt travel.

FYI--I had read your post and travel note earlier regarding Abu Simbel and the rifles! How surreal that must have been. Thank you for all of your help with Egypt travel on this forum...it is much appreciated.

Pam
Hi Alice! Just got back from our Egypt trip. Your notes were very helpful. We didn't even have much of a problem with the vendors etc. guess we were too tough for them. We were with a Insight Tour with only nine of us. What a great company and a great Tour Director. We couldn't have been more pleased. We were on the Nile seven nights which gave us some really nice days to relax and not have to do so much in any one day. Thanks again for your good information. Don

Alice, I meant to write to you after receiving the last installment (the "negative" one). I can't remember if I ever did, so if I did, forgive the duplicate input.

My friend and I were in Egypt for 2 weeks in November and we didn't experience any of the negatives you mentioned. We found the food to be good (hey, if it's edible by our standards on the continent of Africa, that rates as pretty good in my book!), our cruise was fine--had to wait about 30 hours to get through the locks going up river, but that wasn't the fault of the tour company or the cruise line. The people were very friendly and Grand Circle took very good care of us. Of course, we stayed in 5-star hotels because that's what the tour provided. If going on my own, I would probably have opted for the Windsor, as you did.

Also, we didn't have a week on our own as you did. That would make a difference in our experience of the country. But we found everything met our expectations and surpassed them in many cases.

By the way, in the tombs I used 400 speed film and pushed it to 800 (I have a manual Pentax) and the slides came out great. I didn't bother taking pictures in the museums.

More than half of the two Grand Circle groups had mummy tummy, but we avoided the salads and didn't get it. I did have ice cubes in my Pepsi 3 times on the boat and never got sick. They assured me they used bottled water for the ice cubes and they must have been telling the truth.

We loved Egypt. Didn't want to leave and would go back in a heartbeat! Wouldn't want to live there, but it was such an exotic experience!

One more thing. I dragged along a container of powdered lemonade to pep up the bottled water and we never needed to use it. I don't like water under the best of circumstances. And I had never had bottled water before, but the water we had was just fine, for what it was. It didn't need improving.

And to those wondering about film--you can hand it around, but be sure you don't get flustered like I did and end up passing it right through to the guy! He said to me, "Well, now you really did it!" But my 400 film was fine even after exposing it to the x-ray. I just didn't use my faster-speed film. Didn't really need it anyway. (See my previous message about pushing 400 film.)

The level of comfort you will experience in traveling in Egypt is directly proportionate to whether you travel independently or with a tour group.

For first time travellers to a developing country, I would highly recommend going with a tour group. You simply do not have to put up with as much hassle as you are buffered by the tour guide. Better yet, do as I did, and do both, some days independently and the rest with a tour group. Gives you more time to explore Cairo before or after leaving for the cruise.

It is VERY SAFE in Egypt; just be prepared for haggling over most prices and KNOW WHAT THE GOING RATE IS BEFORE GETTING TO EGYPT ie especially taxi's where the trip from downtown to the Pyramids can range from as low as 20 pounds to as high or higher than 60 pounds.

For more help on EVERYTHING TO DO WITH TRAVELING IN EGYPT GO TO:

www.touregypt.net

Best Regards, Alice
