Are the planes flying to Africa unsafe

My Friend is adopting from Uganda. She will be flying out ord. She has read that planes are outdated and unsafe. I told her I would post on fodors for advice

Please post experiences and knowledge of safety records

Does South African airlines fly there? If so it is a great airline, I flew it many times when I lived in Madagascar.

Thank you. I am not sure why some forums say it is so unsafe!

Well honestly I think I would be afraid of many of them....SA is different. Check the choices she has and then check their safety record. I am very picky about airlines that I fly, and that is ok to be.

Wow. That does sound scary if there are issues with other planes!

What planes - to and from the US? My son and his wife lived in Uganda for several years and went back and forth regularly. They were never on rinky-dink airlines - they were on United, Emirates, KLM, etc.

British Air flies ORD to Entebbe. I've flown it several times.

sf is correct in if those are the airlines of choice they are all good. I didn't mean to alarm you. It isn't the planes going to major hubs that can scare you, it is when you have to fly local airlines. I have driven through remote areas before to keep from having to fly rinky dink. Wonderful reason for trip and will be wonderful outcome. Tell your friend not to worry.

Do a Kayak dot come search. Up pops United or United/Lufthansa combo, KLM.

Thank you all I am sending her this thread!

SAA is fine if heading to Madagascar which is next door to South Africa, but Uganda is in East Africa. No reason to even consider SAA when having to fly via Johannesburg/JNB for a connecting flight to Uganda.

Patricia - any of the major air carriers that fly between ORD and Uganda are fine, as if these same carriers were flying to/from Europe.

Check Kayak, www.kayak.com for flights/schedules/prices.
