Where did you read about flooding in Aqaba and Petra? The Jordan Times has an article on flooding in Gaza, but nothing on Aqaba or Petra.

Interesting, I read in the Egypt news that the borders between Jordan and Israel as well as Isreal and Egypt were closed due to flooding in the area. There was also a lot of damage on the Sinai Peninsula from same.

Back on the 19th Jan an article in an Egyptian paper (Google search will bring up the article) - those freak storms over the Nile killing some, also in Gaza, Sharm etc. Might have been just that - "freak" occurence. Can't say what's today or will be when you travel.

I live in Aqaba and can tell u that the recent floods were the result of an unusual rainfall in Aqaba. Usually it rains for a few minutes here and we had rain that lasted for 8 hours. Some tourists were stranded in Petra simply because they headed there when the rain was falling and rain water came gushing down from the mountains. But there is no visible damage from the floods and there wouldn't be anything to worry about when you get here in a couple of weeks. I visited Petra on February 13, 2010 and was told by my driver/guide and also by a local Petra guide that there had been extensive flooding a few days prior to my visit which necessitated closing the entire site for two days. I saw no effects of the flooding-everything seemed to be operating as normal. It seemed to be unusually warm, though. I was expecting 50-60 F, but it was probably in the 80s. Wear good walking shoes--it's an exhausting day. Petra was amazing!
