Sandstorms are a nuisance - but it's hard to predict when they will occur. Sometimes there was a "feel" in the air and sometimes the local Egyptians would mention that one was coming.
I wouldn't let concern over sandstorms worry you. Most of them pass thru - just like a thunderstorm - and are gone. Altho sometimes they lasted a couple of hours. Try to carry a scarf with you to put over your face in case you get caught in one while out and about.
To me - it always felt like a hot, grit-filled hair dryer was blowing in my face! Not pleasant - but bearable for a little bit if you could cover your nose and eyes. The weirdest time was when we were driving back to Cairo from Sharm......it was just like a rainstorm - but with sand! You could see the "sheets" of sand blowing across the road in front of you!
In short - don't worry about them...just be ready to have a wonderful adventure in Egypt! It's a spectacular place!
