Kennedy has had all cancellations this month, so I'm sure he'll be happy to show you around. He has put both his daughters in boarding schools this week (so they won’t have to walk back and forth) and spent the rest of the week (during the riots) in the country with his wife Val, to avoid any possible harm in Nairobi. Kenyans are tired of this nonsense and want to get back to regular living without fear. I have called him a couple of times and had a few emails mostly personal in nature. Here's what he says about the situation:
I know you have been waiting for my update. We have just left Nyiva in her new school and are on our way home. I have been so busy trying to get the little girl a boarding school as we can no longer risk having her going to school in the morning and evening in this uncertain Nairobi Streets. We finally got one as much as it was very expensive for this un-planned one!! As per the opposition, I remember telling you that demos here mean TOTAL chaos!! The demonstrations have happened and they are still more bloody in Eldoret /Kisumu region. I was in the city yesterday and I was caught in some little tear gas. I was with my wife shopping for Nyiva for her boarding. We left 30 minutes later but it was fine. Only that many people had to walk to their homes as the public vehicles where not allowed in town with those demos. Am in a cyber cafe.
For the nights we spent at our country side home, the torches you brought were great!!. You may have no idea. Our country side has no electricity, its like Maasai Mara-very beautiful!! Thank you so much ... so much. We really enjoyed the quiet sleep far from the chaos in Nairobi. We woke up at 10.00hrs !!! We are fine.
Cheers !

Kennedy emails me today in reference to an article I sent him yesterday: Kenyan tourism businesses at verge of despair By Wolfgang H. Thome | Jan 18, 2008
http://www.eturbonews.com/905/kenyan...-verge-despair
This is a proper update. It really saves me a lot of writing as it places things exactly the way things are. The only thing I want to add (and I have told you before) is that, there are NO demonstrations in Kenya now!! There are only goons on payroll, to Kill, to destroy and show the world that Kenyans are mad at the election outcome !! They are told .... start .... stop .... start ... hold on ... start and so on !! Of course we were mad with the elections, but we’re ready to move on -may be after registering our concerns with true demos, but surely the normal Kenyan wouldn't go to the current extreme !!
Sometimes I do not understand how the world works. If in Rwanda, they are looking for Felicien Kabuga and the others who incited the genocide, why are they not looking for the readily available organizers of tribal cleansing here!! Do some beings have a right to terminate life while others don't? Why is justice so selective (or is it injustice)? What is the world waiting for? Pretending that there are demos when for sure a known group of people is scheming killings and destruction 24 hours without flinching an eye lid!! They are known, and they even give time frame ... that on this date, our goons will be on the streets ...... business as usual !!
Well, the writer has said it all. It feels very bad. None of our drivers have been out since that time I used to say... Joe went to Maasai Mara ... Maurice went to Samburu and came back .... Elly went here and there and came back safely. Now, None … and we have not had any business and the month is coming slowly to a close and the monthly settlements come along without fail. So what happens with tourism !!
The tribal clashes are still being organized ... of course by the politicians ..... for how long?... and who will say to them organizers .... "now we know, you say ... stop and it stops. You say start and it starts .... so, now, ..... SAY STOP!!
Well, will get in touch if I have something to let you know,

I received another email from Kennedy this morning,
Hi, We’re still fine. Nothing much to write about except that the tribal tension is still on in some residential areas in Nairobi and it is the one I had earlier on indicated was the worst it could get to. We hope this will be stopped somehow. It is not very spread but which ever way, it's frightening to be asked by someone holding a machete which tribe you come from !!!
It is calm in Nairobi as the opposition went to Kisumu to bury one of the victims of the police !!. They promised more "demos " when they come back ... starting Thursday... If Kofi Annan comes in time, may be something good can happen. I have lost a Chinese group that was to come this week !!
All the very Best.
