Any cheaper options to get to Maun?

We're considering a trip to Botswana in the green season. For whatever reason, it looks like I can only get to JNB on frequent flyer mileage and would have to make the rest of the trip on my own dime. We're a family of 4 and prices on SAA and Air Botswana are coming in around $2,000 for return to JNB. Are there any other options that might be cheaper?

Take a bus.

Hire a car and drop off in Maun. You would incur charges for the vehicle to be returned to Joburg. Unless, as I read it, you parked it for the duration in Maun, and drove it back to Joburg.

Fly to Gaborone, then take a bus or rent a car.

You might also check to see if Livingstone or Vic Falls can be incorporated into your itinerary. That maybe a less expensive alternative incorporating it into your plans. Transfers between there and Kasane is relatively cheap.
