Antimalarials for one day in Victoria Falls?

we will have 10 days in Non-malarial South Africa in January after spending a couple of weeks in Tanzania. We will take our malarone for a week after leaving Tanzania. At the end of our trip we are spending 24 hrs in Victoria Falls staying at the Mercure A'Zambezi. Do we need to go back on the malarone for another 14 days or can we take the doxycycline & be extra vigilant. What do people do when they have only a one day stop over?

Hello,

You definitely need anti-malarials for Vic Falls -- in January, it's the mddle of summer and prime time for mosquitoes. You should also use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in the evenings.

Both Malarone and doxy are good anti-malarials -- one is not more effective than the other. Malarone might be a better choice because you only have to take it for a week after leaving the malarial region, rather than 4 weeks as with doxy.

Cheers,
Julian
