Alert for anyone planning to use Delta Skymiles for award travel on Air France or KLM this summer

I posted this on the airline board but thought I'd cross post it here as well.

Found this thread on flyertalk today and confirmed with the Delta partner award desk -

There's a blackout period in effect from June 1, 2005 through August 31, 2005 and no new award reservations will be taken for travel on either Air France or KLM during this blackout period. This was just announced yesterday and doesn't apply to already ticketed awards or those with reservations on 14 day hold.

I know most people make their award reservations far in advance but others may try to book on short notice in hopes of last minute inventory releases, so wanted to give a heads up.

I was told that as far as the partner award agents know, the blackout period only applies to Jun-Aug this year and nothing has been announced for 2006. I may be wrong but I believe this is the first year that a blackout period has been in effect with regard to AF/KL awards.

Again those that have existing tickets or are currently holding confirmed reservations are OK.

Luckily this doesn't affect me for November, but it does mean that redeeming a Skyteam award to East Africa will be impossible this summer (as if it wasn't already difficult enough) since KLM is the only Skyteam carrier that serves NBO/JRO/DAR. Only option left is South African which requires 2 separate awards to get to East Africa and also has very limited availability

Of course, if you can find a decent price...think of all the miles you'll be earning!
