I second van der Post. His "A Story is Like the Wind" (?) is wonderful.

I agree with all of those who said, " Things fall apart" by Chinua Achebe, The Flame Trees of Thika, by Elspeth Huxley, Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen, and Uhuru by Robert Ruark (and anything else by him). I would also suggest, The Tree Where Man Was Born, by Peter Mathiessen. Happy reading and have a wonderful trip.

Sam:<BR><BR>Being an elephant lover, I have all the books by the experts. However, my very favorite is "Coming of Age with Elephants" by Joyce Poole. I have read this book about 15 times and never tire of it. Though it is out of print, Barnes and Noble and Amazon often have it available in their "out of print" sections. I know you'll enjoy it.<BR><BR>Jan

I just finished reading a true story about a Swiss woman who moves to Kenya to marry a Massai warrior. I read it in French, translated from German, but I am not sure if it is available in English or not. It would be called something like "The White Massaii" and it is by Corrinne Hofmann.
