African music

Linjudy posted 4 great videos taken on their trip. The last of the four has some African music on it that is really nice. I'd like to get a CD of African music. Any recommendations? Thanks, Jack

Don't now what linjudy used, but I recommend
Oliver Mtukudzi--just about cd by him. He is from zim, but popular all over southern Africa.

Hi,
Just to follow on ddgattina, go to this web site and you can hear samples of Mtukudzi's music.

I wholeheartedly endorse Mtukudzi, but you could also check out Alpha Yaya Diallo. I got one of his for my brother (who is VERY into African music) and he said it was great. I found it on www.cdbaby.com and clicked on world music. It's a great website for finding small individual artists who don't get carried by places such as amazon.com.

Youssou N'Dour is the absolute fav of my husband and I. He's Senegalese, and has become quite popular internationally. His music and voice are fantastic! I used to love his music even before going to Africa (it made me long to go even more!), and now that I've been, his music quickly "brings me back" in time to our Tanzania trip... We used several of his songs as part of the soundtrack to our DVD slideshow of our Africa trip photos...

Some other great African music: Check out the Putumayo World Music label titles: Mali to Memphis, Africa, Women of Africa. (www.putumayo.com)
Habib Koite is also terrific. Johnny Clegg, a white guy, is great for a South African feel.

Hello,

I'm a big fan of Soweto String Quartet -- I always play their Renaissance and Zebra Crossing albums when I'm pining for Africa!

Cheers,
Julian

Youssou N'Dour...

One might think you were empathizing with me about my wife (you so endure), but we know that's not true, don't we... ;)

Here’s an amazing website with traditional Kenyan music:

If we are getting into west african music (like diallo) I'd also suggest Issa Bagayogo (Mali--and perhaps the best crossover artist from africa around, really must check him out!!!), Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo.

You MUST buy the soundtrack to the movie "The Power of One." Just trust me on this. (And see the movie if you haven't.)
Happy listening,
Sharon
