African music

Has anyone come across any African music in their travels? If so, what groups would you recommend that I look into? I love South African choral music, Algerian rai and artists like Youssou N'Dour, Cesaria Evora, Miriam Makeba, Juluka and King Sunny Ade. Thanks.

Among my favorites:

Ismael Lo (of Senegal, considered the "Bob Dylan of Africa")

Angelique Kidjo (Benin)

Busi Mhlongo (South Africa -- check out her "Zulu Music" CD)

Hugh Masekela (South Africa)

Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa)

Les Nubians (French, by way of West Africa)

Papa Wemba (Congo)

and, of course, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa)

Also, if you're into hip-hop at all, check out Kwaito music in South Africa. It's rap music with African beats that that comes from the townships. It's hot.
There seems to be many South African music choices. Any suggestions for Kenyan or Tanzania music? I am especially interested in traditional music. I am also a jazz fan and would appreciate any suggestions of any East African jazz artists.

I stumbled upon Fela Kuti (Nigerian) in college. Described as Afro-Funk and a master of hypnotic rhythms, he has some great stuff and a history to go with it. At times I've even heard DJ's sample his beats in various places, mainly trendy shops/lounges in Soho-NYC. There is some very catchy stuff there. Available averywhere too. Check it out - I believe I have "Confusion" and one other album.

Thanks beachbums. I'll do a search on iTunes and my local CD store to see what I can find. Afro-funk is right up my alley!
