Advice or recommendations please
Can anybody recommend or advice a good device for recording the night sounds while on safari,I would like a good memory or memory cards as I don't intend doing any downloading while I am there if thats at all possible. I originally thought about my ipod but I read somewhere that its just not man enough.I know there have been posts on this in the past but I can't find them now.

At Nxabega (Botswana), I left my camera on the deck of my tent, and turned the camera to the movie setting, and pressed the start button.
I've now got an SD card with 2 hours of the sound of bell frogs, elephants, lions, and assorted other fauna. |
I used a Canon S2 (Point & Shoot still camera) to record sound. In addition to the movie mode it has a record sound only mode which will record something 4 hours of stereo sound on a 1 gig card.

I posted this a while ago:
"I had been thinking about using an mp3 player as a recorder and found this link: http://listserv.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/...hat&P=2157 The poster uses a Zen Nano Plus (which we happen to have) and a Sonic Sleuth microphone. I have just ordered the microphone from Amazon Market place for about $30 and will post again when I have a chance to test it. If it works, it would be a cheap light answer to the problem and you could listen to tunes while traveling. It would be really neat to add sound to presentations" Since then I picked up the Sonic Sleuth and have tried it with my Nano and it works pretty well. There is some hum recorded but it's not bad. I'll be taking this set up to Ecuador/Galapagos in Jan. 2008 and Africa in May-Aug. 2008. |
Thanks for your replys think I'll try the camera first as I have that already.
Tom did you leave your camera inside or ouside of the tent. tuckeg Going to look on that site now to see if it is compatable with my Apple Ipod. I have been looking at a digital voice recorder/players but did'nt know if it would work for sounds at a distance has anybody had any experience with these? I am now going to try out my camera. |
bookmarking - what a great idea, and a sound track would be a great souvenir.

I'd love a copy of that sound track!

Keah - I did not record for hours, only for a few minutes and did it both inside and outside the tent.

Going to look at the Olympus WS-320 recorder /player and see if that works they do offer an external microphone but I will try it out without first, I guess if it picks up the birds /pheasants, waterhens (thats all we have round here) it should pick up the lions etc.If I get a good recording then you are welcome to a copy bomastilife
