Advice on choosing Safari Tour Company in South Africa?

Hi All,

I managed to get friend to come along, and now have about a week for a safari. I am in Jo'burg on biz, so it will be departing from there, so probably the Kriger area is a good bet.

I want to do a 5-6 day safari about $1000 per person (not incl. flights) and we want an unforgettable experience - lots of animals, cool lodging, adventure - does not have to be luxurious, basic comforts. Any tour recommendations?

I'd like to have 1-2 days for R & R before we return either at a lodge or at a close coastal town.

I've read so many informative trip reports here, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the wealth of info. Any help for a first timer?

Thanks so much!!!

Donna

mtbeds.co.za (JoAnne is the person I worked with) Have used them twice...March 2004 and November 2005. Can not recommend them higher. Deep discounts for bookings within 2-3 weeks of travel. $1000 sounds low though for 5-6 days.

Hi,

the Drifters Kruger trip might be OK for you, http://www.drifters.co.za/index.asp?pgid=62.

Good luck with your planning,

Pol

That's a hard call at about $200 a day. I would suggest that you look at Thompsons Indaba Safaris for southern Kruger experiences.

Or check into some BA Comair packages, they might still be competitive enough.

If those two do not offer up the safari you are looking for I woudl then defer you to the Madikwe where I suspect that the pricing of Buffalo Rideg might be within your budget.

If not then explore the Pilanesburg and specifically Bakubung Lodge.

I am interested in knowing what you end up doing. Please post your decision with costs.
