Accomodation in Jordan

We will be in Jordan (Amman and Petra) in January, and are looking for reasonable accommodation. In both Amman and Petra, we are considering the Marriott, only because we can't seem to find nice, clean, centrally located accommodation that is not part of an international chain. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was considering Taybet Zaman in Petra, but as we are going to be there in January when it is quite cold, I thought it may not be suitable. The idea of being in a stone house in an open courtyard with wind whipping around makes me shiver. Has anyone stayed there in winter? Your help is appreciated!

Haven't stayed at the Taybet Zaman, only had cocktails at sunset in the month of October. However, this hotel is quite a distance from Petra itself and is more expensive compared to some of the chain hotels. The closest hotel to the entrance to Petra is the Movenpick which is a European chain and while the design is not like their properties in Cairo or Luxor (low bungalow-type large rooms with great landscaping), the convenience might be worth being situated here.

In Amman which is built on seven hills, I believe the Marriot is up north in the new modern residential area where you will find a very Western environment - including malls.

And you are right in considering the weather during January which can be cold, and it's been known to snow in Amman; though not sure how cold it will be in Petra. But even if the days are comfortable, the evenings can be downright cold, as it is the desert.

We stayed at the Movenpick for one night in Spring of 2000. I believe that the hotel was very new at that time and we thought it was very nice. It is extemely convenient to Petra, that is, virtually at the entrance.

I, too, stayed at the Movenpick in Petra and it was an excellent hotel. In Amman, the Grand Hyatt - excellent. I don't hesitate to recommend both. You might also have a look-see here:

Enjoy your trip - Jordan is a spectacular place and the people, some of the friendliest you will ever meet.

I've just returned from Jordan and stayed at both Amman and Petra Marriotts. They are very nice, and very well located.
The Amman property is in an upscale neighborhood, walking distance from many nice cafes and restaurants.
The Petra location is on the scenic road overlooking the Petra valley.
Amman has both indoor and outdoor pools, and spa services.
Petra has a very nice outdoor pool, and turkish bath services.
