accommodation in south africa

We are a retired couple visiting South Africa in May this year. We are seeking advice about reasonable accommodation on the Garden Route - Swellendam, Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Port Elizabeth. We want clean and comfortable places to stay with breakfast, but at a reasonable cost, around say R500 per night.

Also has anyone stayed in Sandton? We have a few nights there and wonder if a hotel can be recommended by anyone. We are looking at a room rate around R600 - R700 per night.

When you speak of R500/night for accommodation on the Garden Route are you talking of a room rate or a per person rate? Could you also define what you deem as being reasonable accommodation eg. to some people sleeping over at a backpack would be reasonable but to others not?

Just a comment at this stage is that if you are talking of a room rate (i.e R500 for 2 people per night) in my opinion your chances of finding reasonable accommodation are rather slim

Anyway let me hear what your definition of the rate is before I try and help you further.

Unfortunately I cant help you too much with Sandton accommodation however "Room with a View" in Melville seems to have budget rooms at R400/person/night on a b&b basis.

Hope the above helps.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

I grew up in Mossel Bay and know the Garden route rather well.

May is low season and you will have NO problems finding nice B&Bs for around R500 for the 2 of you! If your budget is R500 EACH then you can basically stay anywhere!

Just to give you an idea of what's available, go here:

We travelled in May 2004 and we also had NO problem at ALL finding charming and comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation along the garden route for less than 500 Rand per night (for the both of us).

A good place to start is the Portfolio Collection website which provides a search tool to narrow down the list. Personally, I preferred to deal directly with the owners rather than through this intermediary and was able to negotiate substantial discounts this way.
I never finished my trip report but I did finish the garden route part of it and mention my accommodation choices in the report.
If you can't find it give me a holler.
We were blown away by how high the standards were in guest houses charging such great low prices.
