Anybody seen one?

According to ana rticle in the lastest Africa Geographic, there is one in virtual residence at Chongwe in the lower Zambezi, the sight of bleary eyed guests being woken specially to see this rarity amused me until I realized I would be one of those guests. The writer also talks of seeing three Pel's in three days and a fish trap with the following in attendance,
5 Fish Eagle
4 HoneyBadger
2 Saddlebill Stork
1 Leopard
1 Civet

Unfortunately no pear tree's around.
The writer recommends Jody Higgins very strongly at Chongwe.

I saw this one in 2003. It was a private farm on the Limpopo River near Tabazimbe in South Africa. I was told this was a young one. If you look at this picture and click on "original" you can see how long the nails or claws are for digging.

Thanks. I think that the porcupine is at the top of my list. I would love to be able to get a good shot of one.

I haven't seen a honey badger or a Pel's. And I did not get a picture of the civet I saw at night at MalaMala. I did see quite a few Fish Eagles and Saddlebill Storks in Botswana.

I guess I need to subscribe to that magazine. Or not. Like I need any other encouragement to day dream about Africa every day!

Unfortunately, Jody Higgins is no longer at Chongwe. Not sure where he went...there were rumours that he would take over as manager of another nearby lodge, but that did not materialize.

I only had the opportunity to do one game drive with him, but he is a fantastic guide. Definitely in the top 3 of guides that I have had so far.

I really love that Baobab tree where you zoomed the lens during the exposure. Pretty creative thinking!

divewop - that is how that picture was taken. And I can't take credit for the creativity. Chas Glatzer showed us how to do that on the Botswana trip (he was the leader of the workshop). I've been thinking about doing one of his bear workshops. I was just "talking" to him today to see if he was doing this workshop in 2007 http://www.shootthelight.com/worksho...bears_2006.htm He said he will have this workshop in 2007 as well as another trip to Botswana and a trip to China to photograph the Panda (besides all the other trips in his workshop schedule). The bears may have to wait! I would definitely do another trip to Botswana with him and I'm anxious to hear the details of the China trip.

I have had great luck with Honey Badger in Botswana, seeing them at virtually every camp, often in daylight. The best Civet sighting was at chiefs were at night we just happened to shine the spotlight from the deck and watched a civet enter stage right and exit stage left, probably 300 yards.

Keep me posted on the '07 Botswana trip if you hear about it before he posts it on his website. I'm definitely interested in the details as I've not been to Botswana yet and that would be one heck of a good excuse to go! :-)

Okay, napamatt, I've added the Honey Badger to my list of wants. And the Bat-Eared Fox. I can't believe we drove all over Botswana and never saw a Honey Badger and you saw them everywhere. Gotta go back!
