Just a quick note to call attention to this evenings 60 Minutes. The description reads "threats to the great Wildebeest Migration". Sorry for the short notice and apologies if this has already been posted.

Thansk again....I just watched the 60 Minutes article, would have perhaps missed it if not for your posting ...
so Thanks Again safarichuck1 |
Thanks. I saw it.
That was depressing.
Never can be sure about the accuracy of these programs when they can't get the name of the wildlife right.
Exactly; that was no waterbuck the cheetah was eating! Thanks for being positive. Now I feel better! =D>
Saw it. Interesting though that no mention was made of the fact there has been a drought in East Africa for years. Though the deforestration of the Mau Forest doesn't help... "water from the skies" would!
As to the migration, at one time (believe in the '50s) the massive herds never made it into the Mara. They simply wandered around the Serengeti, never crossing into Kenya. The wildies found in the Mara then were the resident herds. |
I haven't been this board much the last few months but I thought of all of you when I saw this story. And of course my wife and I felt the requisite excitement watching and saying "We were there!"
Below is a link for those of you that missed the 60 minute show yesterday. I wish I had noticed it sooner so that more of you could have watched but the link should be a good one.

Opps, forgot to mention, click on the Great Migration on the right side panel and close you eyes during the introductory Viagra commercial.

Funny, I noticed the same thing -- definitely not a waterbuck, looked like a reedbuck but not a great angle.
As the voice over said "waterbuck" I immediately informed my husband, "That's not a waterbuck." I too could not tell for sure what it was, maybe reedbuck because I couldn't see the stripes of a gazelle, but maybe the stripes were obscured by the angle.
There was also the comment that later in the summer the migration starts. Late summer in North America, but not in Kenya. WayneHazel, nice to hear from you again. You were one of the reasons I included a couple of chimp visits in my Nyungwe trip. I did get to see them on both trips. One visit was easy and the other was quite a struggle. I thought of you while I was there. |
I vote for reedbuck too, but couldn't see very well. It wasn't an impala, tommy or granti. It could've been a bushbuck, but not there. Seemed small to be an oribi.
I meant to say, it seemed too large to be an oribi.
It looked to me almost as if the journalist worked in some story around his African vacation in order for CBS to cover his expenses. If so, it wouldn't be the first time I've noticed this.
I don't think the cost of a few days trip to the Masai Mara would be too costly for CBS that this segment would have to be part of the journalist's own vacation. Remember, there also had to be a film crew, which most of us don't take on our holidays! :)

Hey Lynn,
I am working through your trip report now. How exciting! It sounds like Nyungwe is getting better and better. You saw a lot and didn't risk your life for it ;) I am looking at the pics too. |
