60 Minutes - this Sunday evening

Just wanted to let those who are interested in the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's team raising orphaned rhinos and elephants know that 60 Minutes will be highlighting the orphans and the work Dr. Daphne Sheldrick does on behalf of wildlife
this Sunday evening.

Thanks for the heads up Jan.
I'll be sure to tune in.
I wish you could catch Jeff Corwin's show (Corwin's Quest) from '05 when he was playing in the mud w/ them. It was on again the other night.

Can someone tell me where this applalling phrase "heads up" has come from.

Fuzzy,

What is truly appalling about the phrase is that investigating its source has further distracted me from work I should be doing right now.

Here is what I found: It means "Watch out!" It comes from baseball and American football, where a shout of "heads up!" means that a ball is coming in your direction and that you should be looking up in order to spot it.

And thanks for that heads up Jan.

That's funny. I always thought it was a baseball expression. But as a youth I had a fear of getting clocked with a baseball.

Hmm, wonder where "clocked" comes from...

Just received a note from the U.S. Friends of Sheldrick Trust stating
"On March 29, we advised that this Sunday's episode of 60 Minutes would include a program about The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

We have just received notice that the program is being rescheduled for a later date.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience".

Thus we will have to wait until a later date to watch this. If I hear the new date I'll let you all know.

Oh shoot, I was really looking forward to this. Now they'll probably have some horrible expose on organic gardens or an interview with a dictator.

I like the show, but that ticking clock gives me the creeps sometimes.

I fail to see what is appalling about the phrase "heads up." It's the equivalent of "Fore!" in golf. A kind favor really.

My not liking it is obviously just a personal thing. But I do wonder how and why phrases suddenly spring into life. If it is from baseball then I assume it has been in use in that context for many years. Yet I can honestly say the first time I ever heard it was November 2005 - in a sentence that went something like this - "I'll be giving it the heads up" and this thread is the first time in writing.

Makes me think of those toy dogs with the wobbly heads.

Too bad, I was looking forward to this. I bet it got replaced with the topic of "undocumented immigrants" (is that the PC term?). So instead I can play with my new Photoshop and Africa photos tonight, yippie!
