5 Hrs in Joburg Airport

We have have 5 hour stopover in Joburg Airport on a Thursday. Does anybody have any ideas, how to best utilise this time, shops, interesting places, etc where we may get a taxi.
Thanks Rod

One option is Caesars Palace (http://www.caesars.co.za) which has 2 hotels and an entertainment complex very near (a 5 minute drive from)the airport. I would contact them and find out specifics of going there for the period that you will be there. I know they have a shuttle for hotel guests but taking a taxi would also not be a problem.

They have a spa as well as a casino and restaurant and shopping complex. You may want to schedule a massage or use their indoor pool. Their website gives prices so use of the pool is R80 . A half hour shoulder, back and neck massage is R190 and a full hour is R350. (about $50).

Otherwise you could just walk around the shops there and eat at one of the restaurants and if you are into gambling, you can do that.

About 20 minutes (on the outskirts of Joburg) is Eastgate Mall. Very near Eastgate is Bruma market which has a great selection of crafts and curios.

I'm not sure what taxi prices would be to Eastgate.

I would suggest that you have a tour guide pick you up and give you a tour of Soweto. It probably wouldn't cost much more than if you were to take a cab into Sandton Square and by the time you factor in all the useless things you will buy in Sandton Square or any other shopping center it will be a lot less and provide a valuable and hopefully treasured cultural experience.

I think that they could pick you up, take you to Soweto, have a bite to eat at the celebrated Wandie's Place restaurant and back to the airport within four hours.

Save the shopping for your local mall.

Agreed, the Soweto tour would be the thing to do!

Thanks for these ideas, my wife will be thrilled if we can get to Soweto even for just a few hours. As I thought it would be too far away from the Airport.
