4 Nights in Kruger - Help
I am spending 4 nights in early August in Kruger Park and then plan to head to Djuma, in the Sabi Sands, via the Orphen Gate for 2 nights. What do you think of this itinerary?
2 nights Skukuza, 1 night Satara, 1 night Olifants. I was going to do 2 nights in Satara - but it's not available. I'm flying into Kruger Airport (KMIA). |
no help but a question. if you are flying to Kruger, do you rent a car there or do the places you are staying take you around? thanks
|
Hey thanks for nothing... Kidding, I can help w/ that one. It depends what you want to do and where you want to go. If you plan to go to Kruger Park as opposed to one of the private game reserves (Ex. Sabi Sands) you can rent a car and drive yourself to a rest camp in the park. From there you can self drive yourself on safari. There aer also ranger led game drives in the morning and evening from many of the different rest camps in the Park.
We plan to fly into the Kruger Mpumalanga Int'l Airport (there are a few different airports near Kruger) and rent a car. Then do the itinerary I listed above. We'll probably do a few ranger led drives and self drives as well. Then we will go to a private reserve in the Sabi Sands where we will have ranger led drives the whole time. |

I visited Kruger several years ago, and stayed at Skukuza and Satara. My primary requirement was excellent game viewing, and based on my research, those two camps were in the best area, and I was not disappointed (easily found, by myself, the Big Five on first day). But, they are not the most attractive camps, and I wish I had added a day or two at Olifants, which is supposedly one of the nicer camps.

Do you recommend doing the park ranger drives, or just get in our car and drive ourselves?
|
Drive yourself during the day, but do the guided drives at night (since you are not permitted to drive yourself at night). The park is well-marked, and with patience you should see a lot (don't drive 50 mph on the main roads, like some I saw, but drive slowly on the dirt roads that branch off the main roads).
