4 nights in Cape Town
 

We will be in Jo'burg in early Jan 07 for a conference and would like to tack on a 4-night trip to Cape Town. Where would you recommend a 40-year old, adventure-type, no kid, middle-high income couple stay and what activities should we do? Shark dive? Abseil? etc.

What to Do:

- Boat Cruise at the V&A Waterfront
- dinner at Mama Africa (Long Street)
- Table Mountain
- Robben Island (if you are into history)
- visit to the Cape Winelands with wine tasting

...and there are a million more things to do.

Ifyou want to dive with the sharks go t0 Hemanus or Gannsbi though you can catch a tour from Cape Town. Dinner at Balthazars at the waterfront is nice as well - though was really windy the night we were there - thankfully the waiter shut the windows

Waterfront hotel, budget will dictate which, also plent B&B's in the city bowl that are worth their salt too.

Being active I would recommend a day of kyaking off Simonstown. A day of hiking, suggest across table mountain, if you are fit enough walk up the Cape Town side and down through Kirstenbosch, otherwise use the cable car up and walk from there. I would suggest that you take a mountain guide.

Going into the winelands, hire some mountain bikes and thread your way through the vineyards.

I just spent a week in Cape Town. The things I enjoyed most were Robben Island and a trip to the Cape of Good Hope going to Hout Bay for the seal cruise and circling back through Simon's Town and Boulder Beach. Kirstenbosch Gardens is also a beautiful conservatory that you could spend hours walking through.

Note that when I attempted to book a tour to Robben Island it was sold out for a week in advance. The only way I was able to tour Robben Island was to book it along with a township tour through Hylton Ross. IMHO seeing Robben Island is an experience not to be missed. The township tour was very informative but I can't say it was enjoyable seeing the living conditions of people there.
Also, the lines for the tram to Table Mountain are very long. I arrived at 11 am and did not arrive at the top until 1 pm. When I came down at 3 pm though there was no line. Arrive either very early or mid-afternoon to avoid the lines.
