1st trip to Africia need help
Hello,
We are taking our first trip to africa and need some advice. Looking to go to Chobe, Moremi and the Okavango Delta. Looking for a tour that is easier on the budget, tenting and helping out is fine. Looking to go for about 8 days, flexible on when we go. Thinking of going late October. Any help with picking out a tour or timing or advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jan |
Where you coming from? USA? If so, the rigors of several long flights, time change and $2,000 air fare is worth it only if I stay at least 14 days. If you're coming down from Europe, then ok.

Jan, you might want to take a look at www.africaguide.com. They're a UK-based web site that seems to me to be a clearing house for many types of trips to Africa, from budget to higher priced. I think it's a great resource. I can't tell you anything about the specific tour operators, but you might get some ideas that would help you decide what you'd like to do.
Best of luck. |
Nice timing for wildlife, especially if early Oct. Will be really hot. Oct is known as suicide month. Your locations are excellent.
Masson has been used for camping by several people. I will check them out when I look for a mobile in Botswana. Two weeks would be much better than 8 days, but if it is 8 days or not go to Africa, you have some great locations for your time in Africa. Interesting link, Steve. The prices on some of those are really low. |
For my first safari (2 years ago) I did the "Migration Routes" camping trip offered by Wilderness Safaris (WS). It hit all the areas you mention, plus Victoria Falls. It involved a combination of air and road transfers between camps, the camps themselves were "seasonal" (not really permanent, but not really 'mobile camps' either) and consisted of two-man dome tents which were quite comfortable, and you did not have to assist in cooking, camp maintanence, etc. This, and similar packages, are offered through many agents that book WS. I went through Eyes on Africa in Chicago. Here's their web page for this itinerary, which will give you the details: http://www.eyesonafrica.net/safaris/.../migration.htm If this sounds of interest, I can provide a link to my trip report & pics from this trip. I had a fabulous time and thought it was the best trip ever -- until I went to Zambia last year! (No doubt, Zambia will fall to the next safari destination...)

Rickmck,
Your adventurer safari sounds very good. Please post your pictures and the trip report, as many will benefit. Thanks!! |
Karibu Safaris does tented safaris of the kind you're looking for. You might look at them. It's been many years since we went with them, but I think they are still doing great trips.

mkulove,
Here's a link to the trip report and pics, from the "Southern Africa Trip report Index": Author: rickmck Date: 12/21/2007, 03:57 pm RICKMCK's Botswana Mobile (WS Migration Routes) + Mala Mala (October 2007) http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35087419 pics: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35089092 |
further to rickmck, the migrations route for 2009 has been improved and now has urinal toilets in the back of each tent. also, the long 8 hour road trip that was often complained about has been removed. the 2009 cost for the migrations route is $4075 all inclusive. flights from USA to/from the beginning and ending point would be about 2,400.

Interesting description from you, Safari_Crai shall contact you about this trip...want to do a similar trip. Toilet urinals in the back tent - how extraordinary!

Here is another option for you (link below). Have you considered self-drive with camping? Robin

you have to walk through a zipper opening to get to the toilet so it is not right inside the tent. craig |

does very budget conscious trips. Maybe that is also an option. www.outofafricasafaris.co.za is another one. SV |
