A 43cm round and 73 cm long bag calculates out to be 101L. FWIW
Your welcome sandi.

Okay, so i guess that's enough about the suitcase, does anyone have a list of must takes on your trip. Items that they found were great to have or oh so wished they had packed them. How about a great list of things to pack. We will be in africa for 18 days and we leave on oct 1st. Thanks in advance for any help you give us.

I have just realized that we will be spending one extra day in Tanzania. We will be flying out of Nairobi to come home. Any suggestions as to what to do with this extra day??

1/extra day... ugh!
Well, while most visitors do this at the beginning as an intro to safari, it could be a visit to Arusha National Park for walking and canoe safari. No predators, but lots of giraffe, colobus monkey.

Otherwise, you can arrange a village visit at N'gresi or Teneguru (sp... I'm sorry about that) in/around Mt. Meru area.

Best to ask your tour operator for options.

Hi Lizan, glad you posted back on this thread, I had recalled someone from Ladner was going to Africa, but couldn't find the thread! Wish I would have seen this on Aug 25th when you posted about the bag, we had an Afree-kah night here at the house three days later that we would have loved to have seen you at!

Anyhow, just wanted to say that if you wanted to drop by for coffee (we live in Richmond) you would be very welcome to come on over & we can sit & chat & I can answer any questions you may have about what to take, etc. Of course my reputation on this board preceedes me for taking WAY too much but I have improved!! (honest...)

To see what I mean by that & for a good chuckle (and some great ideas from fellow Fodorites) see the following:

In regards to bags we all took Lanza WM II 57cm Wheelbag •30 (H), 57 (W), 30 (D) cm. and they were more than adequate for 3 weeks safari. Although we didnt take half of the things on "The List".
While I'm here, what is the best to see water in the Ewaso Ngiro river?
Hope you have a great trip lizann.

Hi Lizann,

First two safaris we used the wheeled duffle bags that Micato sent us - but that was not ideal as the wheels & bottom frame weigh 6 lbs, which made the bag just under 9lbs. For last year's safari we bought the 30" Mtn Equipment Co-op duffle bag and it was PERFECT.

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_d...45524441772735

The 30" is the large one (78 cm), it weighs 2 lbs, which left 31 lbs for us to pack. And - best of all, it was $29.99 at the store. You just can't go wrong! While at MEC if you do go there, they also sell really handy little rolls of TP in a plastic dispenser, perfect for the bush loos. We had plenty of room in the bag, pack it cubes or ziplocks are a good plan to find things in a hurry. I needed the room on the way back for gifts that were given to us (or things we bought). But it still wasn't overstuffed. I'm thinking seriously of using them for our cruise too in the fall.

You don't carry your bag whatsoever while on safari, so wheels are not needed - only place we handled the bags were London airport and Nairobi airport where carts are free. I never missed the wheels at all.

If you would like to see one before you buy, come for coffee, I have three in the house. (Jim often tells me our house is not unlike a 'bag' shop)
