11 nights around Cape Town

My husband and I have 11 nights in and around Cape Town in early March. We are planning on seeing the sights in Cape town (and spending one night in Stellenbosh) over the first 5 nights, as we are going to a friend's wedding on our 5th night. Then we have another 6 nights to hire a car and go somewhere outside CT, then are flying back from CT airport. We do not want to be travelling too far each day as we'd like a relaxing break and so would rather stay in each place for a minimum of 2 nights, although wouldn't mind a stop over for one night. Has anyone got any advice on:
a) what would be the best area to stay in in Cape Town, bearing in mind we want to do Table Mountain and probably Robben Island and have friends staying in the Waterfront that we want to hook up with in the evenings, but would quite like a sea view. Is Camps Bay too far out?
b)where should we head for the second week? Is it too ambitious to head to the Garden Route - if not where would be the best base for 2/3 nights. If it is too far, what about Hermanus or going back to the winelands or somewhere else.
Recommendations welcome!
