11 hr. layover nairobi--easy to catch cab at airport for day tour?

hi everyone! we have an 11 hour layover in nairobi en route to tanzania. would like to hire a cab for the day, and see blixen museum & sheldrick orphanage (maybe giraffe center IF time), and eat at carnivore. does this seem feasible time-wise? our flight arrives at kenyatta airport at 6:45am, and departs at 6pm.

at what time should we be back at the airport for a 6pm flight? am i correct that blixen/carnivore/sheldrick/giraffe center are all on the airport side of town, and wouldn't involve getting into heavy downtown traffic?

is it easy enough to just hire a cab for the day at the airport instead of planning something in advance? i'm a little "planned out" at the moment. any idea what a cab hire for the day should cost? thanks so much!

Sure , if you make good arrangements with the driver to pick you up , you will be able to do all of the above . Note that the Sheldrick Orphanage is only open from 11am . The bixen and Giraffe Center can be done in an hour each , lunch at the Carnivore [ a great experience ] . Yes , you do not need to go to the major traffic jam . From JKIA , you are winged to this places through South C , Lang'ata road . Here you are sure to get to the airport in time for your flight . It is not a good idea to just get into a can at the airport and head to this centers . You might just land into the hands of a normal taxis driver who does not know exactly what you are talking about but willing to take your money -end result is a poor experience and time wasting . Communication is also an issue [ like a good English speaking driver makes work easier for you . For the day trips I suggest you inquire with [email protected] for the day trips . It could cost about $30 per person for all of the day .

Regards .

cheapiano - You may wish to contact the link provided, but know that they have been soliciting business in every post they make.

If you want a reliable outfitter to handle your needs, contact Kennedy at Waymark Safaris... www.waymarksafaris.com/index.htm

LyndaS was the first to use Kennedy and all those since have been extremely pleased.

Question? Did you arrange for this long layover? I ask, as there are flights from JKIA to JRO at 8am, mid-morning or noon and then later in the day. Or did you specifically want time for sightseeing? You'll have to be back at JKIA 2/hrs prior your 6pm flight - it is international-to-international.

ah ha! i kinda wondered about that. ok, will check out that link.

yes, the layover was planned so that we could have a day in nairobi. and thanks---yeah, i thought we should plan to be back there 2 hours early, but thought i'd double check.

do you agree that we should have enough time to see those things, and that we shouldn't be in nasty traffic staying on that side of town? and you think it's best to have something planned in advance rather than just hire a cab at the airport? thanks again!

If you have limited time, have set this schedule to see what you wish, I'd prearrange. Not to say you couldn't possibly find a taxi driver with good language skills and know where you want to go... I personally, wouldn't.

In addition to Kennedy, consider contacting your Tanzania oufitter who will probably have a Kenyan partner who can provide driver/vehicle to handle these activities for you.

... when getting prices, verify whether rate is for driver/vehicle only and you pay entry fees direct OR all inclusive - Blixen, Giraffe Center, Sheldrick, even lunch at Carnivore.
