Travel to NY Cruise Port

I'm a total novice at bus travel, but I've heard that you can get a bus from Allentown, PA that takes you to the Port of New York. (I'm really trying to find an economical way to get to the port without driving into the city.) Does anyone know anything about the TransBridge bus? How difficult is it to manage something like this? I will be traveling with my brother and senior citizen mother. Any suggestions???

Transbridge is a regular bus company--like Greyhound or a commuter line. Buses in NYC go to the Port Authority Bus terminal at 40th street and 8th avenue

Which "port of new york"? I';ve lived here my whole life an never heard anything called exactly that. There are cruises that leave from piers that are about a 5 minute taxi ride from the bus terminal, but there are also cruises that leave from Brooklyn-- a much more expensive and time consuming taxi ride.
I assume you will have real luggage, and with an elderly mother,
you'd need to take a taxi from the bus station. Also check with Transbridge. Some buses are used by daily commuters and maybe they don't have luggage holds?

There are 3 different places where cruise shops dock in the port of New York -one in New jersey, one on the west side of Manhattan and one in Red Hook in Brooklyn. Getting to each one is a whole different matter.

Which specific "port" do you need to go to? When do you have to be there? How long is the cruise and how much luggage will you all have to deal with?

Take the Bieber bus from the old Charcoal Drive-in in Wescosville to the Port Authority. The bus only makes one more stop, in Hellertown, before directly proceeding to NYC. See www.BieberTourways.com. It usually takes about 1 hr 45 min, depending on time of day.

Once you're in NYC, take a taxi to the pier/boat.

If you're going on a weekday morning, get to the Charcoal drive in early as the buses are often very full with commuters. It's a nice ride, comfy buses, good drivers.

I'm really not sure of an exact port name. Carnival cruise line just indicated that it was the Port of New York. The cruise date is Saturday, June 18. Departure is at 5:00 PM. It is a 5-day cruise, returning on Thursday morning, June 23.

According to the Carnival website, a 5-day cruise to New England and Canada leaves on June18, from the Port of New York. A further search on the Carnival site for port directions reveals that the location is

New York City Passenger Ship Terminal
Pier# 88/90/92
711 12th Avenue at 55th Street
New York City, New York 10019

The Port Authority Bus Terminal where your bus will arrive is at 8th Ave at 41st St. The ship's departure location is a short cab ride away.

tlsnyder -

Please keep track of that info - so you get to the right place on time. Even in Manhattan there is a sizable pier area - and you don;t want to be hauling your luggage blocks and blocks.

Thanks for the help! I've printed out the terminal address. Now I just need to make contact with the bus company and find out their schedule. Hopefully, they are scheduled to run to and from the pier on the dates we need.

The Bieber buses run many times a day, often hourly. Their schedules are posted online: www.BieberTourways.com

Give yourself plenty of "cushion" time, in case there's a traffic jam and you're delayed.

"Hopefully, they are scheduled to run to and from the pier on the dates we need."

Remember that neither Bieber nor Transbridge go TO THE PIERS. They go to the bus terminal which is about 15 blocks away.
You'll need to allow time to get a taxi (sometimes there are long lines) and the time to get to the pier (could be 5 minutes, could be 30 in traffic, even for such a short distance)

If departure is at 5 pm you want to be there several hours in advance. I assume you would need a bus that gets you to the Port Authority by noon - so you have time to get your luggage, make your way through a very large bus station (many hundreds of buses a day on multiple levels), get on line for a cab - may be 30 or 40 in front of you, then get to the pier and boarded onto the ship.

You also need to be sure that you can handle all of your luggage on a crowded escalator without any help. Or if it's too much for your mom you may have to leave her at the top, another person at the bottom and a third person shuttle the luggage between the two.
