Good food in Windermere, Chepstow, Canterbury, Dover?
Hi all,
I'm looking for restaurant suggestions for the aforementioned cities. Things that are relatively inexpensive are preferable, since like all travelers we are on a budget. We are trying to stick to a "Food of Britain and/or former-or-current colonies" as our theme...last time we were in the UK we found ourselves falling for Pizza Express and other nonsense so we're trying to make ourselves eat more British food this go round. Hope the addition of "and colonies" is not too offensive of a distinction

I can only suggest somewhere in Canterbury. Try Tiny Tim's Tearoom in St Margaret's Street, it quicte close to the Cathedral. Serves local produce and has attentive staff, they have a website, but all I did was google Tiny Tim's.
Although Dover is close I don't get there very often and cannot reccomend anywhere

Just south of Windermere (5 miles)
Punchbowl Inn
Very English.
The cafe at Lakeland Plastics very award winning. The Lindeth Howe is again very English and expensive.

Hi all, thanks for your answers thus far. To answer the question about budget, we're thinking around 10 pounds for lunch, 20 for dinner as max. So, quite limited but if there's anything really excellent let us know because we could manage a splurge here or there.

The Lakeland Cafe is a great call by Humpty - and the shop is wonderful too.

Also, for an absolutely incredible bargain do look at Holbeck Ghyll for LUNCH. They are currently doing a 2 course Michelin starred lunch for £24 (two courses). We went there a couple of weeks back and it was gorgeous - the dining room overlooks the Lake with views of the Fells beyond, the service was great and the food was just amazing. I can't recommend it enough, and the building itself is lovely too. It would be a highlight of your holiday without being too much of a splurge. Dinner there would blow you budget though. But lunch is a bargain!

Even better shout than Lakeland was Holbeck Ghyll no idea that they did lunch for a deal. Last time we ate there, the evening starters were £24 (nearly).
Morgana : Have you been to Rheged ? Tebay services' operating company run it and the farm food area is larger than Tebay. I have driven past it 500 times but went in for the first time last weekend. There are 4 eating "zones" which are tiered for your needs. The food was the best "pub grub" type I have had since The George and Dragon (down the road).

Yes, the lunch deal at Holbeck Ghyll is amazing - not sure if it's only going to run during the winter months though?
We absolutely scrapped clean every plate they gave us, including the nibbles and canapes. Totally delicious. Such a beautiful place too.
I did smile when I saw the chap at the table next to us chase the last drops of sauce off his plate with some bread - we clearly weren't the only ones thinking it was good. It's 2 courses for £24 or 3 courses for £30, about 5 choices for each course, and generous servings too. We went on a Friday lunchtime and it was full. Ask for a place by the window - what a view!
